Coastal Asphalt’s team of experts can handle your paving project in a number of ways depending on the current condition of the asphalt surface. Once the level of deterioration in a pavement system is determined, we will work with property managers and owners to provide a custom solution to fit the situation.

For each level of pavement deterioration, there are many possible solutions to consider.

If the asphalt surface has deteriorated beyond repair, it is best to remove the entire layer of asphalt down to its aggregate base.

Coastal Asphalt can remove the surface in a variety of ways, depending on access to the property.

Milling, a process used to remove old, worn out pavement, is a viable option when working on residential streets or large parking lots. Asphalt can also be removed by machinery such as an excavator, backhoe, or loader.

Once the surface has been removed, the base layer will be evaluated and any additional base will be added, fine graded and compacted to create positive drainage and a firm foundation. The surface can then be reinstalled or paved.

If the asphalt surface has exceeded its expected lifespan of 15 to 25 years and the sub-grade is intact, another option would be to mill transitions and complete an overlay.

This process is the least invasive and involves milling along any curbs, driveways, or side streets, followed by a minimum of a one-inch surface course of asphalt.

While one solution may be less expensive than another, there are trade-offs to consider in order to make the best decision. Be aware of the trade-offs that are made when selecting a particular option so there are no surprises in the long run, including more expense and continued pavement deterioration.

Once you have chosen an option and understand the trade-offs, clearly-defined job specifications should be created that includes standard units of measurement for pricing and payment purposes. It should also be very clear who is responsible for the performance of the job specifications.
