Traffic Control Supervisor

 

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Traffic Control Supervisor to lead and manage daily traffic control operations for roadway, paving, milling, and utility projects. This position is responsible for supervising multiple traffic control crews, coordinating work with project managers and outside vendors, maintaining traffic control equipment and signage inventory, and ensuring all operations are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate is a strong leader who can manage employees, organize operations, communicate professionally
with customers and contractors, and maintain accountability across all traffic control activities.

Leadership & Crew Management
• Lead and supervise multiple traffic control crews on various job sites.
• Schedule and coordinate manpower, equipment, and daily crew assignments.
• Train, mentor, and develop crew members and foremen.
• Maintain accountability for attendance, performance, safety, and professionalism.
• Conduct daily communication with crews regarding job expectations and operational changes.
• Ensure crews arrive on-site prepared with proper signage, equipment, PPE, and traffic control plans.
• Assist with employee evaluations, hiring recommendations, and disciplinary actions when necessary.

Traffic Control Operations
• Oversee traffic control setups including lane closures, flagging operations, detours, and work zones.
• Ensure all setups comply with MUTCD guidelines, SCDOT standards, and company policies.
• Review traffic control plans and make field adjustments as conditions require.
• Coordinate emergency traffic situations and ensure safe movement of the traveling public through work zones.
• Work closely with superintendents, project managers, dispatchers, and paving crews to support production goals.

Vendor & Customer Coordination
• Coordinate and manage outside traffic control vendors and subcontractors when additional support is required.
• Maintain professional relationships with contractors, inspectors, law enforcement, and customers.
• Schedule rental equipment, specialty signage, and additional traffic control resources when needed.
• Ensure outside vendors meet company expectations for safety, performance, and professionalism.

Inventory & Equipment Management
• Maintain organization and accountability of all traffic control inventory and equipment.
• Track and manage signage, cones, drums, barricades, arrow boards, message boards, and related equipment.
• Ensure damaged or missing equipment is repaired or replaced promptly.
• Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering materials and supplies as needed.
• Maintain organized traffic control yards, trailers, and storage areas.

Safety & Compliance
• Enforce all company safety policies and work zone safety procedures.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and field inspections.
• Ensure employees wear required PPE and follow proper traffic control procedures.
• Investigate incidents, equipment damage, and safety concerns when required.
• Ensure all certifications and training remain current and compliant.

Skills & Qualifications
• Previous traffic control and supervisory experience required.
• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Thorough understanding of MUTCD guidelines and work zone safety practices.
• Ability to manage multiple crews and projects simultaneously.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to maintain professionalism in high-pressure environments.
• Experience coordinating with subcontractors and outside vendors preferred.
• Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and accountability.

Requirements
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Traffic Control Supervisor certification preferred.
• SCDOT traffic control certification preferred.
• Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and nights as operations require.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, move, and handle traffic control equipment when needed.
• Must maintain a professional attitude and represent the company positively at all times.
